The general rule for suits is to wear a lace up shoe. Again, the general rule is that loafers are for sport coats and outfits without sport coats. Having said that, a number of executives have developed a style incorporating better dress loafers with their suits. A “dress loafer” is a loafer with a thinner sole.
The most popular dress lace-ups today are the cap-toe and the squared toe featured below.
A black shoe should be worn with a black, blue, and grey suit. Browns may be worn with olive, tan, and brown suits. Cordovan is a color that may be worn with all but a black and certain brown suits. In Europe, fashionable men also wear brown and light tan shoes with blue and grey suits. This is acceptable in the U.S. but is tricky and if not done properly can hurt your look rather than help it.
Regardless, of what color shoe you choose, your belt must match your shoes. The brown doesn’t have to be exact but it should be dark if your shoes are dark and light if your shoes are lighter. |
